To Tuku-Tuku or Not To Tuku-Tuku?!?!

Tuku-tukus are small pick-ups with a transformed bed to seat passengers.  They are the most common form of transportation in Thailand and often serve as private taxis.  Several friends, our travel agent and trip forums have warned of the questionable safety of this popular form of transportation.  They are everywhere, always waiting and very affordable…prices vary from $0.30 to $6 depending on your destination, amount of people and number of stops.  It would honestly be difficult to not ride in a Tuku-Tuku while in Pattaya!!!

For the most part, our Tuku-Tukus have been fun and uneventful…until yesterday.  We were on our way home from an exhausting day at the Floating Market and we took a Tuku-Tuku home.  I was snapping photos of the sights…people riding on tops of pick-ups, babies on motorcycles, toddlers on the edges of side carts…when our driver hit the breaks and sent Emme and I smashing into Gideon.  Our Tuku-Tuku was not in its prime and had a random piece of metal sticking out that fortunately prevented Gideon’s head from crashing into the rear window, but did manage to leave Gideon with a nice sized bump on his noggin.  Thankfully we all survived with no permanent damage and have determined to Tuku-Tuku again today!
